Recipe For Justice comes to Icicle Creek Music Center’s Canyon Wren Recital Hall on Mother’s Day, May 8, at 2:30pm. Written by award-winning Leavenworth author Susan G. Butruille, the lively and poignant two-act musical readers theatre salutes Washington women’s right to vote in 1910, leading to national suffrage in 1920. The play, which premiered at Sleeping Lady’s Chapel Theatre, follows three generations of women – the matriarch, her daughter, and two granddaughters – as they plan a celebration dinner. Voices of suffragist Spirits (acting at times as a Greek chorus) join in as the family women share recipes, songs, memories, and contrary views over women’s rights and family relationships.
New suffrage-era music weaves through Recipe For Justice, presented by Icicle Creek Music Center and Icicle Arts. Susan Butruille directs the production, with Mandi Wickline serving as assistant director and Mary Sanders playing piano. Cast members are: Carolyn Giger, Christine Cassayre, Renata Rumann, Mandi Wickline, Lindsay Camp, Carolyn Wilson, Georgia Bakke-Tull, Kaylee Geske, Mary Ellen Kerby, Ted Fredericks, Michael Haire, Patrick Murphy, and Susan Butruille.
Tickets, at $14 adults and $7 students (no children under five please), are sold through brownpapertickets.com, A Book For All Seasons in Leavenworth, and Avalon Music in Wenatchee. Sleeping Lady brunch and dinner packages are available through sleepinglady.com. Period dress is invited.
